FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

At SJ Aesthetics, in St Thomas Ontario, your peace of mind is important to us and we understand that you might have questions about Botox® and dermal injections. Feel free to ask even the most basic questions like, What Is Botox? Here you will find the most commonly asked questions about medical injections but feel free to send us any other inquiries you might have.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is considered a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, also known as Botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. Once injected with Botox®, it takes up to 2 weeks to see the full effect. We encourage booking a follow-up appointment 2 weeks after the initial injection to ensure that the treatment has been effective. Touch-ups are sometimes required, at an additional cost to the client. Everyone is different and some muscles require more than others.

What is Dysport®?

Dysport® is also considered a neurotoxin containing Botulinum toxin type A. The uses are the same as Botox®.

Botox® vs Dysport®. What’s the difference?

They are just two different types of the same medication, for example, Ibuprofen is found in both Motrin and Advil, same as Botulinum toxin type A is found in both Dysport® and Botox®.

How Long does Botox®/Dysport® last?

Typically 3-4 months.

If Botox® paralyses muscles, can it travel to other muscles in my body and paralyze them?

Absolutely not. When the Botox® is injected it stays locally in the muscle and spreads to a circumference of 1cm from the injection site. The dosing is also much too small to affect large muscles.

What are the side effects of Botox®/Dysport® injections?

Bruising/swelling can occur at the injection sites. In severe cases, brow or eye ptosis can occur, which is the sagging of the eyelid or brow. This is very rare.

Do the injections hurt?

This is very individual and depending on your pain tolerance. Some areas hurt more than others. We offer numbing cream for use on highly sensitive areas.

At what age should I start getting Botox®?

Clients must be over the age of 18 of course. However, the earlier Botox® is initiated the more it will prevent wrinkles from occurring. If those facials muscles are unable to move to cause the crease, wrinkles cannot occur.

Can I get Botox®/Dermal fillers while pregnant?

No, and not during breastfeeding either. There is no evidence to indicate that the injections will affect the fetus/baby, but there is also no evidence to say that it won’t. Better to be safe than sorry.

What are Dermal Fillers?

They are derived from Hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance found in your body. You will see this substance in many facial creams and cosmetics that help improve the signs of aging. It has a high capacity for holding water that keeps skin plump, hydrated and younger looking.

How long do fillers last for?

Typically 6-12 months, depending on how fast your body breaks it down.

What are the side effects of Dermal Fillers?

Swelling and/or bruising are likely to occur. The majority of the swelling will subside within the first 24 hours, but it can take up to 72 hours for it to be completely gone. Ice packs are provided to take home post injection.

What is TMJ and how is it treated with Botox®?

TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. There’s one on each side, and they attach your jaw to the bottom of your skull. Some individuals experience headaches, tension, the inability to open and close the mouth comfortably, and painful clicking, popping or grinding sounds when speaking, chewing, or yawning. By injecting directly into the muscle, Botox® limits muscle function and decreases TMJ symptoms.

What are skinboosters?

Restylane® Skinboosters is a filler treatment which improves skin hydration, firmness and radiance through micro-injections of a very soft hyaluronic acid filler into the skin. They are used to treat skin that appears dull and lifeless by deeply hydrating the skin. This method requires 3 treatments spread 4 weeks apart. After that, only 1 yearly treatment is required for maintenance. The final results really are amazing.

Are there any other uses for Botox® besides for cosmetics?

Yes, Botox® has been shown to effectively treat those who experience migraines and excessive sweating to the underarms, hands or feet.
